8 Baxter, Richard AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF RICHARD BAXTER, 312 pages
REP Hardback NEW
Abridged from the folio [1696]. Baxter was one of the most influential of the Puritans. He recognized the value of books, writing about 170, which have sold in tens of millions since. The amazing thing is that whilst he was such a prolific author he also exercised an exemplary pastoral ministry, preached to Oliver Cromwell AND Charles II, and was hounded by the authorities. Baxter was eventually imprisoned by the nororious 'bloody' Judge Jeffreys whom Baxter obviusly exasperated "I see the rogue in your face." said Jeffreys during the trial. "I was not aware my face was so true a mirror." shot back Baxter. Baxter's autobiography is fascinating because you can read the thoughts behind his plans, actions and concerns. 12 Boreham, F. W. PATHWAY OF ROSES, AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY $18.95 SALE $9.99
AP Softcover NEW
"The man whose biography is not worth writing has never yet been born," writes F.W. Boreham. Few life stories turned out to be more fascinating than his own. In this, his autobiography, he takes us back to the days when there were no cinemas, no motor cars, no planes, no radios, no television. We step back into a world we'll never see again. In this enchanting autobiography we see the young Boreham as the last student, it is reckoned, to be personally admitted by C.H. Spurgeon to his famous Pastors' College. We see him as an usher showing the Princess Mary, later to become Queen Mary, to her seat at D. L. Moody's evangelistic mission in Spurgeon's Tabernacle. We follow him as a young pastor to New Zealand and meet the enthralling characters of his first charge. Boreham was, of course, the most popular christian essayist of his day. His books "A Bunch of Everlastings", "The Passing of John Broadbanks", etc 'were all classics of their kind and, touched millions of lives. His own autobiography, though, is the most touching of all his writings. Read it and you will see that christian work is, ultimately; the most challenging and, yet, the most romantic work possible.

14 Bristol, Sherlock PIONEER PREACHER, THE
University of Ill. Press, 1989, 200 pgs., PB, good condition 1989 0252060911 / 9780252060915
Originally printed in 1887, the Pioneer Preacher is a lively account of a Congregationalist minister's attempts to lead a sin-free existence on the American frontier. Sherlock Bristol (1815-1906) was a California gold miner, wagon train captain, Wi sconsin farmer, Idaho rancher, Indian fighter, abolutionist, and Oberlin-trained clergyman. While serving a series of churches in the East, he periodically cured himself of "nervous disorders" by journeying out west. He only broke the Sabbath once ---during an Indian attack! Greatly influenced by the evangelist Charles G. Finney at Oberlin, Bristol tried to teach miners & frontiersman the principles of revivalism, postmillennialism, & perfectionism. In "The Pioneer Preacher" he shares his own disputatious views on abolition, American Indians, Temperance, & other issues of his day.
