161 Howell, Beth Prim LADY ON A DONKEY [STORY OF LILLIAN TRASHER] [Photos] $29.95 SALE $18.95
EPD 1960 First Edition HARDBACK Good for age of book Good
THIS IS THE WARM and appealing story of LILLIAN TRASHER, one of America's great Christian missionaries whose name is a by-word throughout Egypt. The intensely religious child of a Georgia farm family, Lillian first volunteered for missionary work at a neighboring orphan age and Bible school. It was there, ten days before her wedding was to have taken place, that Lillian got her "call": she was to be a foreign missionary-in what land she did not know, but she knew she could not marry. Lillian's great adventure began in 1911 when at 23, she traveled to Assouit, Egypt. Lillian was fascinated by Egypt's exotic and colorful landscape, but she was appalled by the poverty of its peo ple. Her resolve to care for bodies as well as souls crystallized one day when she came across a dying Egyptian woman, holding her infant in her arms. The mother died before Lillian's eyes, and she took the sick and undernourished baby to her room where she could nurse the child back to health. This was the beginning of the now famous Assouit orphanage. The growth of Lillian's orphanage greatly hampered by lack of funds (Continued on back flap) the hostility and suspicions of the Egyp tians. Since Lillian made it a rule never to turn anyone away, the need for food and money never abated. When a new dormitory was needed, the children and Lillian built a kiln, made their own bricks, and raised the building themselves. Today, 72-year-old Lillian and her chil dren are still remarkably self-sustaining. They grow much of their own food, make most of their own clothes, and depend on help from the thousands of "graduates" of the orphanage. Though the names of some of the characters in the story have been changed, this is a book about real people, people who to a greater or lesser extent, shared in the dream that started in a rented room in the backstreets of As souit. That room has now expanded into headquarters which now boast 11 large buildings-a monument to a courageous woman who planted a Christian message of love in a Moslem country and made it grow and flourish. A former editor and feature writer for The Daily Oklahoman, Beth Prim Howell first heard Lillian Trasher speak in Okla homa City. After Mrs. Howell interviewed Miss Trasher on TV, she felt that she must tell Lillian's story to the world. The result is Beth Prim Howell's first book, Lady on a Donkey.

171 Jackson, Stonewall (by His wife) LIFE AND LETTERS BY "STONEWALL" JACKSON
Sprinkle Pub.; 479 Pgs. 1995 1995 Hard Cover Like New
Hard Cover. Like New. This volume gives the most authoritative view of the domestic side of the General. Mrs. Jackson stayed away from the military narratives. There have been certain conjectures regarding the reasons she wrote this biography. First, she may have desired to set the record straight on some points of controversy. Possibly there was a sense of personal responsibility to create the most accurate literary likeness of her husband once the heavy fog of sorrow had cleared. She stated, "For many years after the death of my husband the shadow over my life was so deep, and all that concerned him so sacred, that I could not consent to lift the veil to the public gaze. But time softens." She obviously did consent to lift the veil, and time, by the providence of God, did ease her sadness. She desired to speak from her heart and did so very graciously.
